Maroon 5 is not only a lovely colour for a living room, it’s also the name of a very popular band that had some massive songs in the late 90’s. This Love and She Will Be Loved were just two songs from their triple platinum selling album, Songs About Jane.
Since then, they went very quiet until they burst back with Moves Like Jagger – a ridiculously catchy duet with Christina Aguilera, which so far has sold 8 million copies, making it one of the biggest selling singles of all time. It came on the back of front man Adam Levine’s mentoring stint on the American version of The Voice. This splattered his voice and face in front of millions for weeks on end. Talk about overexposed! So what’s the rest of the album like?
They’ve definitely taken a more mainstream route, helped along by producer Max Martin who has worked with Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys and N-Sync. So, pretty much every track is a radio friendly hit.
We loved the funky reggae feel to One More Night, immediately followed up by the current and utterly flawless single Payphone. However, we could never play the album version on the radio, due to the very sweary rap.
We also enjoyed the electro pop in of Doin Dirt and the sexy 80’s vibe of Tickets. And although none of the songs quite come up to the addictiveness of Moves Like Jagger , Lucky Strike is a pretty close copy.
In short, it’s a bit magnolia on places with patches of sheer brilliance.
