The two iconic Tinsley cooling towers in Sheffield were demolished this morning in a controlled explosion.

The towers had become a landmark for the millions of drivers passing them by the Tinsley viaduct on the M1 at Sheffield over the decades.

Thousands of people gathered at 3.00am on Sunday morning to witness the blast, which left part of the north tower still standing, although it has since collapsed.

Your comments

Paul Bowery: I thought the towers where ugly and a eye sore. I'm sure I won't miss them but it would be nice to put some kind of land mark in their place.

Susan Brookes: Myself, my partner and our four children all went down to watch the blast. We waited in a Meadowhall car park for three hours for the five second blast. What an experience. I will miss the towers as I have seen them at the side of the viaduct all my life. Although I am very saddened by their demolition, I can understand the reasoning if they were unsafe. Better to be taken down in a controlled manner than causing a major disaster should they fall on the M1.

Philip Rodgers: Sad time for me. I started my working career as an apprentice at Blackburn Meadows Power Station way back in 1976/7.

Paula Jaffray: I will miss the towers. When you saw the towers on the M1 you knew you were home. It isn't the same now they have gone, it's so sad.
