The new superfood: Beetroot!

Well-known “superfoods” include blueberries and olives but now the humble beetroot could have a place on your table!
And though nutritionists have some gripes with the term "superfood", there’s no arguing that beetroots don’t have significant health benefits.
Drinking just under a pint of beetroot juice a day will boost stamina, lower blood pressure and improve heart health – and is an aphrodisiac!
Scientists at Exeter University found that drinking 500ml of the juice everyday boosted the stamina of athletes by 16%.
The secret ingredient is the high levels of nitrate in the juice, which makes the blood absorb oxygen more slowly and allows you to exercise for longer.
It is great news for athletes... but you don’t need to be a professional athlete to get the benefits of beetroots - drinking the juice before you hit the gym could help you to exercise for longer and have a better work out.
