SOVIET spymasters tried to force a top British scientist to defect at the height of the Cold War.

Sir Bernard Lovell, the man behind the Jodrell Bank observatory, today reveals he was a secret adviser to the British military - and that he was prevented from leaving the Soviet Union during a visit in the 1960s.
