First comprising of the Gould brothers, drummer Phil and guitarist Boon, together with bassist Mark King, Level 42 began as a jazz-funk fusion band back in 1980. They released their first top 40 hit “Love Games” in 1981 and their critically acclaimed debut album became an immediate success throughout Europe. The band gained fame for its high calibre musicianship, especially that of Mark King, whose percussive slap bass guitar technique provided the driving groove of many of the band's hits. Initially they were signed to a small independent record label, Elite Records, after being seen jamming together. Shortly after they released the single "Love Meeting Love", they came to the attention of Polydor Records and signed to them.
Best known for their catchy chart-topping tunes like Running In The Family (1987), Lessons In Love (1986) and Something About You (1985) they gained acclaim for their power as a live band, releasing huge selling albums with continued success throughout the 80s and early 90s.
In 1994 they announced they would be disbanding permanently, but after playing numerous tracks, Mark King decided to reform the band in 2001, releasing their hugely popular new album Retroglide in 2006. Although the band members have changed over the years, their original member Mark King, nicknamed "Thunderthumbs" as his thumb was reportedly insured for over £1 million, remain strong with the current line up including Mike Lindup, Gary Husband, Nathan King and Sean Freeman.
With rumours circulating they will be releasing another album this year, they are set to be playing a one-off Greatest Hits Tour, coming to Sheffield City Hall.and you can be there by calling the ticketline on 0870 22 5 00 77.
